When I was a teen I was fortunate enough to discover the great Author Edgar Allan Poe. I was literally enthralled by his writing, captivated by the images and feelings that I would experience when reading his work.
I had always heard that there was a cottage in the Bronx but at the time it was not open because of it's deteriorating condition. It was ultimately restored and some of the pieces of furniture within are authentic to the family.
In November of 2013 I was dropping off my photos for the exhibit at the Poe visitor's center and decided to take a look at the cottage. After having a great conversation with Neil who takes care of the cottage on the weekends I was even more inspired to shoot there.
My first thought was of Virginia his wife, I felt her presence and perhaps her sadness.
At that moment I decided to capture the essence of Poe's young wife for this series.
Shooting there was surreal and my heart was filled with such wonder at the history that was before me. This shoot will definitely stay with me for a long time.
If you find yourself in the Bronx on a weekend, please stop by Poe Park and visit his cottage and share in a little bit of history.
My favorite stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe: (Links included just in case you would like to read them)
The model is Katelyn Gomez and she was an amazing soul much wiser than her years. She braved the cold and wind while barefoot in 31 degree weather. (Don't let the sun fool you) I would also like to thank Laura Alvarez who was so kind to assist during the shoot, you're awesome!
